Although manufactured by the Chevrolet Division of General Motors in the US, the Staghound was built for Great Britain's use in WWII, seeing service with British, Canadian and New Zealand armored units from 1943. Over 2,800 were eventually supplied and they were used extensively in Italy and in the European Campaign. This is a US Army photo that has often been seen published reversed. Notice that even though the British drive from the right side of their vehicles, the Staghound has US style left hand driving with a hull machine gun mounted on the right side of the front armor plate! The main gun was very similar to the one used in the M3 Medium Tank, but was designated as the M24A1 37mm gun. Targeting was by use of a periscope M2 with internal telescope. Anti-aircraft version (T17E2) of the Staghound was designed by Frazer-Nash in Britain, the open topped turret contained two .50cal Browning machine guns, aimed by a sole gunner sitting between the weapons.
Armament: 37 mm, 2 x Browning MG 7.62 mm; weight: 17 tons; armor thickness: from 6 to 32 mm, 2 engines, automatic transmission; max speed 55 mph.; crew: 5.
